Facts and Events
Catherine "Kitty" Creasey was born about 1792, when she was baptised at East Grinstead, Sussex, England, on 2 Sep 1792. Her parents were Walter Creasey and Ann Aldridge. She was possibly named after her father's sister Katherine Creasy. Kitty was the sixth of eight children. It's not known how many of her siblings died before she was born but at least two elder siblings, Mary and George, and one younger sibling, Thomas, lived to adulthood. Kitty's elder sister Mary ended up in the workhouse later in life, and her brothers George and Thomas were agricultural labourers, so it would be fair to assume that Kitty's family was working class and not well off. On 28 May 1815 Kitty married Thomas Gorringe at East Grinstead. The witnesses were Kitty's mother or sister Ann Creasey, William Harman, and Robert Payne. Thomas and Kitty's first child, George, was baptised at Worth, Sussex, on 13 October 1816. George was followed by seven more children, all baptised in Worth: Harriett in 1819, Thomas in 1821, John in 1823, William in 1826, Elizabeth in 1828, Daniel in 1831, and Henry in 1834. Sadly William died in 1830 at the age of 4 and was buried at Worth. Kitty's parents Walter and Ann died and were buried in East Grinstead on 6 June 1828 and 14 January 1832 respectively. They were both in their 70s when they died. The first of Thomas and Kitty's children to marry was their eldest daughter Harriett, who wed agricultural labourer John Hunt at Worth on 16 April 1838. Eldest son George followed Harriett down the isle a few months later, wedding Elizabeth Longley, daughter of shoemaker, schoolmaster, and Parish Clerk, Thomas Longley. By 1841 Thomas and Kitty had moved about 15km away from Worth to Cockshot Mill in Reigate, Surrey (the mill was demolished by 1900), and Thomas was working as a miller. Thomas' sons George, John, and Daniel, all worked as millers in their early careers, and possibly worked with their father. In the 1841 census Thomas and Kitty's sons John, Daniel, and Henry were living with them, along with their grandson William (son of George). George was living with his wife and her parents in Horne. Thomas and Kitty's children Thomas and Elizabeth were not staying with them on the night of the 1841 census and have not yet been identified elsewhere on that census. Thomas and Kitty's son Thomas married Elizabeth Whitmore, daughter of labourer Joseph Whitmore on 12 April 1845 at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Reigate. He would later become a police constable in London, and died aged just 40 in 1861. In 1846 John Gorringe married Elizabeth's sister Harriet Whitmore, and John died just a year after Thomas, aged just 39. Thomas and Kitty's daughter Elizabeth married Stephen Williams in 1847 in Southwark, however they haven't been identified after the 1851 census. Also missing after 1851 is Daniel Gorringe, last known to be living in Leigh and working as a miller. Thomas Gorringe died 31 March 1849 in Leigh, Surrey, at the age of 57. The cause of death isn't recorded ("mortification not certified") but his son Daniel (who was living in Leigh) was present at the death. Kitty died of a fever on 19 May 1850 in Leigh, aged 58. Daniel was also present at her death.
