Facts and Events
George Creasey was baptised 6 Dec 1709 in the market town of East Grinstead, Sussex, England. His parents were John Creasy and Sarah Stevenson. He had one older brother Ninion. George probably had little memory of his grandparents. His paternal grandmother Dorothy (nee Greenwood) died when his father was just a boy and his paternal grandfather John Creasy Sr. died when George was just 3 years old in 1712. His maternal grandfather George Stephenson died the same year and his maternal grandmother Margaret died just a few years later in 1715. George had a number of aunts and uncles on both his father and mother's side but no first cousins have yet been found. Around 1730 George's brother Ninion married Mary (surname unknown) and had two children baptised in 1731 and 1735. On 21 Apr 1738 29 year-old George was married to 23 year-old Mary Card, the youngest child of Nicholas Card and Ann Taylor. George and Mary had 8 children baptised in East Grinstead:
The six-year gap between Mary and George may indicate the birth of a child whose baptism record hasn't yet been found. George's mother Sarah died in 1742 and was buried in St. Swithun's churchyard in East Grinstead. George's father John most likely died between 1709 and 1742 although this is not 100% certain and a possible burial record exists from 1746. Sarah's burial record names her as "Widow Creasy", however her headstone states she was the "wife of John Creasy" rather than the "widow of John Creasy". (NB Burial records for people with the name John Creasy buried in East Grinstead on 1 Nov 1721 & 18 Jul 1741 were both for infants). Sarah was about 38 when George was born so the lack of more children doesn't necessarily indicate that John died shortly after George was born. It's not known when George's wife Mary died - possible burial records exist in East Grinstead in 1783, 1786 or 1796. It's also unknown what became of most of George and Mary's children however John may have been the infant buried in East Grinstead in 1741. George's sons Walter and Edward eventually married and had children, but not until after George died in 1775. George was buried in St. Swithun's Churchyard on 3 Dec 1775. [edit] Geographical and Historical ContextEast Grinstead has been an important market town since the early middle ages. St. Swithun's Church was rebuilt after it was struck by lightning in 1772. Near the entrance to the church, stones mark the supposed ashes of three martyrs who were burned on 18 July 1556 during the reign of Mary I because they refused to renounce the Protestant faith. George was likely born during the reign of Queen Anne. He lived through the reigns of George I & II and died during the reign of George III.
