Facts and Events
Sarah Stevenson/Stephenson was baptised 3 May 1671 in East Grinstead. Her parents were George and Margaret. She had two older siblings named Samuel and Elizabeth, and a younger brother named George baptised in 1676. The gap between Sarah and George indicates a possible birth of another child whose baptism record has not yet been found - a child named Margaret Stephenson was buried in 1674 and she may have been Sarah's sibling. In 1693 Sarah's brother eldest Samuel married Jane Payne in East Grinstead. No children have yet been found for this marriage and no further record has been found for Samuel or Jane. It's not known what became of Sarah's other siblings Elizabeth and George. Sarah didn't marry until she was about 34 years old, when she wed 25 year-old John Creasy, son of surgeon John Creasy Sr. and Dorothy Greenwood. NB John Sr.'s occupation doesn't necessarily indicate he was educated or well-off - in the late middle ages many surgeons had no formal learning and were illiterate. They learned their skills as an apprentice to an experienced surgeon who taught them to suture wounds, set bones, extract teeth, and practise bloodletting. John Jr.'s mother had died when he was a child, and his father remarried. John had 5 younger siblings, one of whom died in his infancy, and it's not known for certain what became of the other siblings. Sarah and John had two known children baptised in East Grinstead:
Sarah's father died in 1712 and her mother died in 1715. Both were buried in East Grinstead. Sarah's husband John most likely died between 1709 and 1742 although this is not 100% certain and a possible burial record exists from 1746. Sarah's burial record names her as "Widow Creasy", however her headstone states she was the "wife of John Creasy" rather than the "widow of John Creasy". (NB Records for people with the name John Creasy buried in East Grinstead on 1 Nov 1721 & 18 Jul 1741 were both for infants). Sarah was about 38 when George was born so the lack of more children doesn't necessarily indicate that John died shortly after George was born. Sarah lived to see her son Ninion marry around 1730 and have children baptised in 1731 and 1735. Her younger son George married Mary Card in 1738 and eventually had 8 children although Sarah only lived to meet the eldest two. Sarah died on 24 Feb 1742 and was buried on 27 Feb in St. Swithun's Churchyard, East Grinstead. Her headstone inscription reads "Near this Place lieth y Body of Sarah the wife of John Creasy who Died 24 Feb 1742 aged 71 Years". [edit] Geographical and Historical ContextEast Grinstead has been an important market town since the early middle ages. St. Swithun's Church was rebuilt after it was struck by lightning in 1772. Near the entrance to the church, stones mark the supposed ashes of three martyrs who were burned on 18 July 1556 during the reign of Mary I because they refused to renounce the Protestant faith. Sarah was likely born during the reign of Charles II. She lived through the reign of James II, the "Glorious Revolution" that put William III & Mary II on the throne, the reign of Queen Anne and George I, and died during the reign of George II.
