Wal moved to Warrnambool in 1921 at about 5 years old and returned to Melbourne in 1927 at about 13 years old where he finished his schooling at Collingwood Central School in Cambridge St. The family moved to Strathalbyn South Australia in 1929 for about 12 months, (it was thought that the warmer climate may help Jean) where he worked with Joe in the plumbing business making water tanks etc. The family returned to Warrnambool where his mother died in 1931 and the 2 brothers then lived with Aunty Agnes (Mrs Ted Looney) cnr Raglen Pde & King St. He started work as a butcher's apprentice at ~16yrs in 1930.
