MEDIA: J0161 - Velva Mae Relyea Knight (Wife Elwin Mayne Knight)(young) J0162 - Velva Mae Relyea Knight (Wife Elwin Mayne Knight)(mature) OBITUARY: The Idaho Statesman | Edition Date: January 12, 2005 idahostatesman.com Velva Mae Relyea Knight, beloved sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away at Life Care Center of Treasure Valley on Dec. 21, 2004 at the age of 100. Velva was born in New Plymouth, Idaho on Dec. 8, 1904 to Sylvester and Idaho Lilly Relyea. Velva attended Valley View Grade School, Plaisted Middle School and graduated from New Plymouth High School. She rode a horse to school even in winter when there was deep snow. Velva, her parents and her three brothers lived on a farm and there were always many chores to be done. She drove the derrick for all the neighbors while her dad stacked the hay. Since mother didn't help milk the cows it was her job to wash the milk separator. Like all farmers at that time there was no electricity or indoor bathrooms. Saturday night was the night to go into town where the parents attended dances in the Pioneer Building and the siblings went to movies and dances. After high school Velva attended and graduated from Boise Teacher's College. She became a teacher at Plaisted Middle School, the same school she attended as a young student. Since she lived in town she had to ride a horse for 6-1/2 miles to school where she had to start the fire and take care of things. Later she then went to Boise to attend Links Business College and she also worked for Dr. Wahle. On Nov. 4, 1925 Velva marred Elwin Mayne Knight. She had met Mr. Knight when she was 16 but they didn't start going together until much later. Elwin attended school in Meridian and volunteered for the Army during World War I when he was 17 (he lied about his age) and fought in France. After their marriage Velva and Elwin lived in Spokane, Wash., where they were blessed with a daughter, Jacqueline. They moved to Pocatello, where their son Bruce was born. They lived there for about 30 years. Elwin was employed by the Railway Mail Service, which later became the Postal Transportation Service. During World War II Velva did her part for the war effort by working as a clerk at Evans Market in Alameda. She then went to work at First Security Bank for 11-1/2 years and became the branch manager. Velva retired from the bank to accompany her husband when he was transferred back to Spokane and subsequently to Seattle. When Elwin retired they moved to Boise to spend their later years with friends and to help Velva's parents. They bought a travel trailer and for 10 years traveled with friends and played lots of cards. Elwin then passed away in February 1974. Velva became one of the first residents of Chateau de Boise and was there for 14 years when declining health made it necessary for her to move to Life Care Center of Treasure Valley. Velva enjoyed card games and most kinds of brainteasers. She was a very attractive woman with an unforgettable smile and a personality that people admired and enjoyed. Velva is survived by her brother Russell Relyea of Salt Lake City; daughter Jacqueline Alderman of Boise; her son and his wife, Bruce and Joyce Knight of Littleton, Colo.; her grandsons Noel (Liz), Neil (Tammy) and Ned (Debbie) Knight of Colorado and Jerry (Lisa) Alderman of Anchorage, Alaska; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elwin, her brothers George and Marion, a son-in-law, Robert Alderman, and a granddaughter, Julie. The family would like to thank all the caring staff, nurses and aides at Life Care Center of Treasure Valley for all the care and love they gave Velva. The family would also like to express their thanks to the loyal and caring people from her church, to the may dear friends and relatives who came to visit her and prayed for her through the years. Each one of you was a blessing to us. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to their favorite charity or to the University Christian Church. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005 at Relyea Funeral Chapel, located at 318 N. Latah Street in Boise. Interment will follow at the Dry Creek Cemetery. |
