Listed in the 1900 Montgomery County, Texas census as Jasper Wiggins, age 52, born August 1847 in Louisiana. Married for 5 years to what looks like Adeline. She is listed as age 42, born September 1857. Married for 5 years. Mother to 6 children, 4 of whom are alive at the time of the census. Both parents are listed as being born in Louisiana (for both Jasper and Adeline). In the same household are Rosa L. Odum, daughter, 7 years old, born December 1892 in Texas, father was from Georgia. Son, David Wiggins, age 13 born August 1886 in Texas, mother was from Georgia. Son, Thomas, age 4, born November 1895 in Texas. Daughter Maud, age 2, born April 1898 in Texas. Listed in the 1910 Montgomery County, Texas census as Jasper Wiggins, age 62, born in Louisiana. Lot #253-257 (I think). Married for the second time for (what looks like) 15 years. Father from Alabama, mother from Louisiana. Occupation farmer.

Second son, 3rd child of 10.

Was in Confederate Army - Looks like "Div F2 La. Cav" on the pension filed by his wife Addie. Filed by himself first as an invalid in 1889, and then again by Addie in what looks like 1901.

According to Houston Tracy, Jr., "The unit abbreviations are for Company D, 1st LA Cavalry and Company F, 2nd LA Cavalry. Addie's application was rejected by the State of Texas and later by the State of Louisiana. Not because Jasper had no proveable military service, but because she was applying for a Confederate Veteran's Pension and he had only served in the Union Army. This was late in the War and his older brother, David Wiggins had been captured as a Confederate in Tennessee and sent to New Orleans to be exchanged. David was offered prison for the duration of the War or 'Volunteer' for the U.S. Army. He chose to do the latter and must have gotten word to Jasper that if he would also 'Volunteer,' he could collect the $100 bounty for enlisting being offered at that time. With both of their parents having died in 1862 & 1863 and their other siblings being reared by their oldest sister and new husband, the family certainly could have used the money, so Jasper did enlist in April of 1864. He spent his time in the Army either sick and in the hospital or standing guard at that hospital. He saw no military fighting. Jasper did draw a $100 a year military veteran's pension, payable every 3 months (quarterly) and by this card you sent, Addie 'did' file on it in November 1911... I thought she dropped pursuing it when she learned from the Treasurers of Texas and Louisiana, he had served for the 'other side.'"

I will have to do more research on this, but the 1st Louisiana Cavalry was CSA, as was the 3rd, so I imagine the 2nd was, as well. This wouldn't fit in with what Houston Tracy is saying....

Marriage records are for U. Jasper Wiggins and Susan A. Carter.
