He was a veteran of the Revo­lutionary War, having served several tours of duty as a member of Captain Charles Polk’s Company of Mecklenburg foot troops. As of 1960, his saber was in the possession of Dellmann O. Hood.

Land records show that he was a "very substantial land owner in Morn­ingstar and Clear Creek Townships in Eastern Mecklenburg County along the headwaters of McAlpine Creek and tributaries of Rocky River."

He owned a number of slaves and was a slave trader, he "once shipped a boat load of Negro slaves through the port of Charleston, S.C., to New Orleans."

His place of burial is not known.
