From John Waddington's "Who's Who" 1610 Ped. 48 p.33 Thomas Waddington of Grindleton, nr. Waddington and Grey's Inn, London, Admn. to Grey's Inn, 23 Aug. 1605. ob s.p., md. 1610 Elizabeth Bereres. daughter of Oliver Bereres of Hamerton-in-Slaidburn. She md. (2) 1615 Thomas Sherburn of Heysham and was bd. 1637 at Chipping. Oliver Bereres was mayor of Preston in 1558 and his grandson, Oliver Bereres, sold Hamerton Hall to Humphrey Chetham of Manchester the latter part of the 17th century, and moved with his family to Leeds. Son and heir of Edward Waddington 1579 of Grindleton. His only sister Isabella Waddington who married John Holden of Chaigley, was Thomas' sole heir. Descended from Richard de Wadyngton 1388 of Coley, Halifax. Sir James Altham, knt., Baron of the Exchequer, was kinsman to Thomas Waddington, 1610 who at one time was in his (Thomas') service. Parker, C.B., F.S.A., of Browsholme, 1926, page 17, XXIII, Hamerton): "Hammerton was sold in 1548 to Oliver Bereres, a member of an old Lancashire family, Mayor of Preston in1588. He built the present Hall at Hamerton, with which is embodied remains of the older house. The Bereres family remained here until the latter part of the 17th century, when the then Oliver Bereres sold Hamerton to Humphrey Chetham of Manchester and moved with his family to Leeds. The Estate now belongs to the Chetham Hospital Trustees." |
