Facts and Events
27 January 1936 (son of Cornelius and Julia Sullivan) "Galva: Tom Sullivan age about 73 was found dead in his bed shortly after noon of Sunday. Funeral services will be conducted at 9 AM on Tuesday at St John's Catholic church in Galva and interment will be in the Catholic cemetery at Kewanee. The deceased is survived by one sister, Mrs Mary Sheahan of Galesburg and by one brother John Sullivan of Pawnee, Illinois He was preceded in death by one brother Cornelius. Long resident of Galva- Mr Sullivan has lived in Galva practically all of his life. He retired from farming about five years ago and at the time of his death resided on Southeast First street in a house which he built many years ago. He had been in the habit of visiting daily at the home of Mrs August Ericson who resided next door. Mrs Ericson remarked to her son, Alrick, on Sunday morning that she had not seen Mr Sullivan since Thursday. Alrick Ericson could get no response to knocks upon the door but he could see groceries setting on the kitchen table which had been delivered on Thursday or Friday. Ericson notified Tom Colfer, a distant relative of Mr Sullvan's. Mr Colfer in company with Mr Ericson, Ed Matson and Emory Norvell entered the house and found Mr Sullivan dead in bed in an upstairs bedroom. They immediately notified Father Barrett of St Johns Catholic church and Dr J M Alford local physician who pronounced him dead. It is thought probable that death occurred from heart trouble since there was no lack of fuel or groceries in the house. Corner J O Stephenson is holding an inquest at John's chapel today." Sullivan Thomas M/W Y-77 0001623 1936-01-24 Henry GALVA - - (son of Cornelius) The only story about Tom that I remember is that he bought all the chances in a church raffle, except one. That one was the winner. I think the family luck has continued to this generation. I can’t win at any chance-type thing. Pat (Mary Patricia Boston) Thanks for doing all the research. I know that Grandpa Sullivan had a sister who married someone named Shane (sp?). She lived in Galesburg, Ill and had several children. Grandpa also had a brother who was an alcoholic and I think never married. He lost his part of the farm because he never paid the taxes. There had been a mix-up and Mom's dad got a notice that he had not paid his taxes. Fortunately Grandpa had a friend in the courthouse who got the confusion straightened out so that Grandpa's brother's farm had the delinquent (sp?) taxes not grandpa's farm. From Beth (Elizabeth Ann Boston) Story that Mom told me several times: McNamera was grandfather's Sullivan's cousin. He went to New York to find the Donahues relatives. He was warned that he would not find Donahue relatives. When back (Kewanee or Galva or Galesburg) he was asked how did he find the relatives. He had a strong Irish accent. He said he had asked a Polish man. When asked how a Polish man would know, he said the man was in a uniform. (Donahues, of course, were supposedly wealthy) Beth (Elizabeth Ann Boston) References
