Died

On Sunday evening August 31 after a short illness, Mrs. Julia Sullivan aged 62 years. The funeral was held at St John’s Catholic church at 10 am Wednesday. A solemn high mass was celebrated by the pastor Rev. J. P. Park, assisted by Father Crowe and Rev. John Garland of Kewanee and Father Charles Francken of Moline. The burial was in St Mary’s Cemetery at Kewanee.

Julia Handley was born in Ireland and came to this country when she was ten years of age. She was married to Cornelius Sullivan in 1859 and moved to the farm three miles southwest of Galva where she lived till about a year ago when with her sons Thomas and John, she moved into town. Mr. Sullivan died here years ago. Seven children were born to the union, only three of whom survive viz: Thomas, Mrs. James G Sheahan and John. Mrs. Sullivan was an exemplary woman whose long life in our community was an influence for good. She was a sister of Sylvester Handley of this city.

Notes: As you can see, Julia had seven children. We (Larry and Elaine) found the baptisimal record of John at St. Malachy in Geneseo, Il. St. Malachy was not formed until 1866. They have no records prior to that date. The Fr. Thomas O'Gara who married Cornelius and Julia we are told by the Archdiocese of Chicago was located out of St. Mary's in Henry, Marshall County, Il. This church does not have a website and we were only given a P.O. Box number. I've written to them but have not received a reply.

In the St. Malachy record we found a Sarah J. Sullivan born to John and Julia and baptized on 6 /7/1868 by Fr. Smyth the same priest that baptized John on 12/4/1871.
