1860 Census Fayette Co., GA household # 227 Thomas Speer age 24 m farmer 1600 3000 GA Sarah F. age 19 f GA

He was a Confederate soldier from 1861 - 1865 . Military records showthat T.C. Speer Pvt. Co. F. 13 Regt. Ga. under Sam W. Jones, and waswounded at Sharpsburg (Antietam), Maryland. He appeared on morning reportat Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia May 15, 1864, V B FaceM.B. MinBall. Andersons Brigade. May 16, 1864 he was transferred to WaysideHospital or General Hospital #9 (Jackson,)in Richmond,Virginia. Stilllisted on May 17, 1864. He was placed on convalescent leave.

After the war he was the guardian of John Wesley "Talley" Speer, son ofJohn Wesley and Emily Loyd Speer. He partley raised ten otherorphans.

On March 20, 1915, the spirit Brother T. C. Speer, took its flight fromearth to an unknown world to us - there to join his dear companion whopreceded him to that beautiful home in the year 1905. Brother Speer wasborn March 17, 1836, being 79 years and 3 day s old at the time of hisdeath. He was married to Miss Sarah r. Loyd Oct.10, 185 5. They livedpeaceably together about fifty years. While they had no children of theirown to brighten their home, they partly raised eleven orphans.

Brother Speer always believed in home mission in caring for the orphanchildren and needy of his community. He was a consistent member of theBaptist church at Line Creek, and believed in living up to the teachingsof God's word. He was one of Fayette County's good citizensand was everready to do his duty for the best interest of his county. He was a memberof the Masonic Lodge # 169 at Mt. Ebal and was a good and true member. Healways said that his church came first and his masonic Lodge next. Sothe church and community is not all that has sustained a great loss, butthe Masons have lost one of their oldest and best members. Brother Speeris the last one of his family and will be greatly missed by his relativesand friends.

Thomas tombstone has a masonic emblem. He was a Master Mason , Lodge169in 1858 at Mt. Ebel, a good and true member. (from his obituary).
