An old story that has been handed down from Joseph is that whe nhereturned home from Illinois, he had a pocket full of white beanswithblue s tripes. He planted the beans (now called pole beans)andharvest a crop from th em for many years. This bean was the maindietof the prison camp. Mint as he wa s called names his beans RockIslandbeans.

Joseph Minton Speer died without a will. His son Joseph Stephen Speer wasappointed administrator of the estate January 10, 1924. Property(about872 acres) w as inventoried 25 January 1924 valued at about $6,000dollars including persona l and real property. Personal propertywas soldin February of 1924 and the sale of the property took place28 May 1926.
