1688, Henrico County, Virginia:
Inventory of the goods, etc., of Thomas Shippey, dec'd., sworn to by Joseph Royall, Martin Elam, Abraham Womack and Edward Stratton, by Frances, the relict and administratrix, 12 October, 1688.
In the name of God, Amen. I, Thomas Shippey, being sick and weak of body but sound and of perfect memory, etc. All that I had by my wife I desire may be equally divided between my wife and child. I give all my lands to my dear child Frances, only my wife to have all the land lying beyond the run by Edward Stratton, Jnr., during here widowhood; all my cattle I give to my wife and child equally.
The Original of ye above record was this day in open court presented by Mr. James Minge as the last will (though unsigned) of Thomas Shippey.
Mrs. Martha Stratton deposes on oath that she heard her son Thomas Shippey upon his death bed say that he gave what estate he had to his wife and child. (Note: Thomas Shippey, Jr.'s mother had married Edward Stratton, Sr. prior to the writing of his will).
Miss Martha Stratton, the younger, declares that she heard her brother Thomas Shippey upon his death bed say that he gave his estate that he had to his wife and child. (Note: Thomas Shippey Jr.'s sister had married Edward Stratton, Jr. prior to the writing of his will).
