Facts and Events
See Gilboa Gazette Aug 1980,pg.7 for story of Catherine and Thomas Reddin. Moved to New Orleans after marriage and she soon returned to Hancock Co.,OH with the Reddins to have her first child (Thomas,JR. b.17Apr1828). In all, they had seven children: 1 farmer, 2 physicians, 3 school teachers, and 1 traveling salesman. See photos of both Catherine and Thomas, courtesy of Mrs. Janice Reddin, CGS. Thos. apparently attended the wedding of Geo.W.Braucht and Susan Hime (son of Theo.Clinton Braucht and Rebecca A. Cashman, 8Jan1877) at Warren Co.,IA. T & C Reddin are both buried at the Benton Ridge Cemetery, Hancock Co.,OH. Early Reddins lived in Clark's Valley, PA near Victoria Mill. Thos. an itinerant painter and sailor (privateer?), served in the Mexican War. He died of Typhoid Fever in OH. See Daniel Braught journal where Thos. had visited him in Mississippi ("given to drink, a liar, etc."). Note Cath. was 19 yrs. younger than Thos. Thos. parents = Daniel Reddin and a Catherine---. Ruby Driskell notes show Thomas Reddin died 4 Feb. 1897 at Hancock Co., OH. Recall that this area was also hit by Cholera in 1888 when it killed Margaret Marks (Mrs. David Braught), but perhaps records incorrectly identified on of these epidemics. One report says he died at home of Typhoid Fever. This same Thomas Reddin appears in data of other Braucht lines (Moses, Jonas), but suspect that those records may be incorrect. However, seek possible verification to connect major lines with this family. Remember also that this Thomas Reddin was a bit of a rover and adventurer (and rascal according to Daniel's diary), etc.. It could be that he had two or more families simultaneously? Janis Reddin report of Thomas says he left England to escape his parents demand that he become a priest. He became a seaman. Janis had his N.T. Bible with notes beginning 5 Sep.1827. See highlights of these notes related to Catherine Braucht in her data. A story related by Aggi-Rose Reddin ([email protected]) June 2000 is that the family expected Thomas Reddin to become a priest in England (it was his turn to have a different career than his sibling, but most other options had been taken by older sibling), which he did not want to do. To escape that life he stowed away on a ship and later became a sea captain in North America. He was an infantrymanin the Gen. Sam Houston army under Col Fanning's command (surrendered to Santa Anna and when all were marched to execution, Reddin and two others bolted to escape) in the Texas struggle with Mexico. He also served in the Union Army during civil war. In 1846 he married at Harrisburg, PA and he went with his bride to live in Hancock Co., OH. He died in 1877. His son Daniel W. Reddin (b. 24 jan 1860, d. 1932) became a pioneer physican after graduating from Univ. Michigan. In 1866 the son moved to N. Baltimore, OH. Daniel married Miss Ella Lochead on 12/28/1886, but she died in 1888 without children. Daniel remarried to Eugenia Bachman at Tiffin, OH in 1893. Daniel W. Reddin, Jr. was born in 1896, was injured in WW 1 by gas attack in France, which altered his plans to become a physician also. He became an executive for the Akron Rubber Co., married Rosina Black in 1921 and went to law school at night. Because of his job travel his wife attended classes for him and he passed exams from her notes. When his father died he moved to Baltimore, OH to care for his grieving mother; passed the bar exams there, and remained there. See more story under the names of the three Daniel Reddin people. |
