Thomas Hammond was baptised on 26th September 1752 at South Bersted in Sussex, son of Mary Hammond, formerly Watts, and her husband William Hammond, a blacksmith. Thomas has yet to be traced after his baptism – there was another Thomas Hammond baptised at South Bersted in 1744, making it hard to tell which later records relate to him. Presumably one of these two will be the Thomas Hammond of Bersted who married Hannah Martin at nearby Aldingbourne in 1776.
