John Hammond was baptised on 21st October 1749 at South Bersted in Sussex, son of Mary Hammond, formerly Watts, and her husband William Hammond, a blacksmith. John has yet to be traced after his baptism - there was another John Hammond baptised at South Bersted in 1747, making it hard to tell which later records belong to which John. Presumably one of them was the John Hammond who married Mary Stocker at South Bersted in 1779.
