Enlisted under Confederacy in Civil War, private in the 36th Virginia Infantry commanded by General Jubal Early. At the battle of Winchester he was wounded and captured by the enemy, being a top Seargent, and confined in prison for 6 months at Pointe Lockout. Released as an exchange, returned home, took up farming and merchandising. Held considerable property holdings in Mingo County. (The History of West Virginia, Old and New, Publ. 1923, The American Historical Society, Inc. Chicago and New York, Vol 2, pp 545-546) Member of the 3rd Virginia Regiment, was with Stonewall Jackson when he met with his death, was with Lee's forces at Appomattox at he final surrender. Served as a justice of the peace in Logan Co, WV, and also as county assessor.
