Attended public schools of Burch Post Office and Concord Normal Schools at Athens, University of Kentucky(medical) and graduated MD in class of 1912. Entered practice in Holden, WV. Went to Rochester, MN to do post-graduate work with Mayo brothers. 1914 did post-grad work with Chicago's Dr. Murphy, distinguished surgeon. Returned to practice in WV at Ivaton Coal River until 1917. Enlisted in Medical Reserve Corps of US Army. Went to Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN, transferred to Camp Meade, Washington, DC, sailed Dec. 1917 for England.Then to France, transferred to different stations until Feb 15, 1919. 10 days later left for Newport News.Then to Richmond, VA, Baltimore MD, Washington DC, Boston MA. March 15, 1919 received honorable discharge, promoted to Captain. Returned to Holden WV, became surgeon for Island Creek Coal Company, came to Burch Post Office in general practice, specializing in surgery. Member of US Medical Reserve Corps, Mingo County Medical Society, West Virginia State Medical Society, American Medical Association,American College of Surgeons. Member of the Blue Lodge of the Masonic Order, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Knights of Pythias, Independant Order of Odd Fellows. Considerable property owned in Burch.
