Facts and Events
Type: aka Type: aka Thomas was born about 1802 his place of birth is unknown, George III was monarch and England was in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars which would be temporarily halted later that year. He married Sarah Atkins on 4th April 1825 in St Margaret's church Leicester which served a huge industrial parish in the nineteenth century, with thousands of poor homes. The parish register entry describes Thomas as a 'bachelor', 'of this parish', interestingly Thomas signed the register himself. Only on his son Robert's marriage certificate is his second name of 'Ralph' recorded. He has two children recorded in St Margaret's parish register William (1826) and Jane (1829). In October 1830 from St Denys parish register Thomas was probably living in New Sleaford area when his son James was baptised, though the 1841 census has him born 'out of county' and 1851 census as born in New Sleaford. In 1833 John was born in Bridge Casterton, Rutland which is a couple of miles from Stamford and near the Lincolnshire border. However Robert was born in 1836 and baptised in St George's Leicester. In 1838 we know he and the family were living in New Sleaford from his son's birth certificate (Thomas). On the 1841 census he still lives there (born 'out of county') and when Alice is born in July 1842 New Sleaford remains his address. Susanna, the last of his children born in 1846 is also baptised in New Sleaford at St Denys. On his death certificate in January 1851 he is recorded as dying at High Street, Lincoln in the parish of St. Botolph. The 1851 census records the remaining family living at 58 High Street. Thomas died on 18th January of 'consumption' known today as tuberculosis, at the time the disease was responsible for 1 in 4 deaths. His death was reported by 'Ann Ridley' of High Street, Lincoln but strangely she does not appear on the 1851 census there, so she remains a mystery. References
