Facts and Events
Robert Curry was born in Leicester and baptised in St George's church in 1836. He moved with his parents to Sleaford and was staying in Lincoln with his mother and siblings after his father's death in 1851. By 1858 he had moved south to Stamford which is not far from Rutland Water. Here he married Tamar Webb on 26th April 1858 at the Registry Office. A marriage license had been purchased beforehand, which was unusual for my ancestors. It is also significant to note that Tamar gave her address as Gateshead. Presumably they met because of her father, George Webb, was a Stonemason and he and Robert had been working together. Thomas Popple one of the witnesses was also a stonemason. On the 1861 census Robert and Tamar are living at Ellison Square in Gateshead, a few doors away from his wife's parents. They have a son John born in approximately 1858 in the household. The houses were built in 1830 to provide good class houses of three stories and with half basements. However, they eventually became tenemented and were demolished during the 1950s. The next census in 1871 the family had moved to West Street in Gateshead not far from Ellison Square. The family had grown, however John b.1858 does no appear in the household so may be deceased. Tamar's parents live with them as does an 18 year old lodger from Leicester Edward Bolton who was a stonemason. in 1878 the family lived at Brunswick Street for the birth of their ninth child Frederick. Brunswick Street was a continuation of High Street again close to their previous addresses in Gateshead. The 1881 census saw Robert and his family relocate to South Hope Street, Bishopwearmouth occupying "New Buildings". On 4th May 1882 Robert died just 3 days after his 46th birthday. His death certificate states the cause of death "Phthisis Pulmonalis", which is consumption cause by tuberculous. His death was registered by a neighbour Margaret Pemberton of 18 Hope Street. There is no trace of a Will in the National Probate Calendar. He is buried in Bishopwearmouth cemetery. References
