Thomas Cain was baptised on 23rd April 1815 at St Paul's Walden in Hertfordshire. He was the son of Mary Cain formerly Parsons and her husband Henry Cain, a tanner. The family lived in Whitwell, the main village in the parish of St Paul's Walden.Thomas appears to have been one of seven children, although at least one of those died as a baby. Thomas's mother Mary died in 1827, when he was only 12 years old.

At the age of 22, Thomas married his first cousin, Sarah Parsons, whose mother, Elizabeth Parsons, had been Thomas's mother's sister. They married at Knebworth, a couple of miles east of both Kimpton and St Paul's Walden, but bordering both parishes. After their marriage they returned to Whitwell. In Whitwell they lived with Thomas's father Henry, and Thomas worked as a tanner, like his father. Sarah worked as a plaiter.

Thomas and Sarah appear to have had five children together between 1839 and 1854, all born in the parish of St Paul's Walden. Sarah died in 1880, aged 63. After her death, Thomas lived with his eldest daughter Emma, who appears not to have married. Thomas outlived Sarah by eleven years and died in 1891, aged 75, being buried at St Paul's Walden on 19th January 1891.
