Emma Cain was born in 1839 in St Paul's Walden in Hertfordshire, daughter of a straw plaiter named Sarah Cain formerly Parsons and her husband Thomas Cain, a tanner. She appears in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses living with her parents, siblings and paternal grandfather. She was not living with her parents at the time of the 1871 census, but by the time of the 1881 census (shortly after her mother Sarah's death) she was back living with her father and working as a plaiter.

Emma has yet to be researched after 1881.
