Thomas GRAY BUCHANAN, merchant, was born 1805 at Glasgow. Lanarkshire (source?). Thomas was son of James Buchanan (17jun1766-1855), who was son of Thomas Buchanan of Ardoch (6nov1733-10dec1789, Burkes's) and Jean Gray; Jean was daughter of John Gray of Dalmarnock ( <http://www.esd.co.nz/buchanan/> ). Thomas Buchanan (1733-1789) was son of John Buchanan of Ardoch (b. 1706) and Mary Crawford/Crauford (Burkes Gen. and Her. Dic. of the landed gentry, 1847). Thomas Buchanan was born 8nov1804 at Glasgow, son of James Gray Buchanan and Ann Parks (submission to LDS). Thomas married Mary Rowand 15oct1835 at Govan, Lanarkshire; Mary Rowand was born 1816 at Glasgow (1861 census Cambuslang, Lanarkshire). The PO Directory Glasgow lists in 1841 Michael Rowand, Linthouse, Glasgow and Ship Bank and son Michael of Buchanan, Rowand and Co., house Linthouse, and Buchanan, Rowand and Co., grain and commission merchants, 33 Virginia St. From "Seekers of truth: the scottish founders of modern public accountancy":Thomas succeeded to the estate of Ardoch in 1857 and sold it in 1863 to a relative, John Findlay of Easterhill, He had 8 children. In 1841 the following families, all born in Lanarkshire, lived (with servants) at Linthouse, Govan; Rowands: Catherine (1811), Andrew (1812, merchant), Alexander (1815, merchant), Michael (1818, merchant), Ann (1821); Buchanans: Thomas (1805 merchant), Mary (1814), Ann (1838), James (1840) (census). In 1861 the Buchanans lived at Wellshott House, Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, with their children and Thomas GRAY BUCHANAN, visitor, (b.1788 Barony, job- stock exchange?), and John GRAY BUCHANAN, brother in law, retired merchant (b. 1785, Port Glasgow) (1861 ce). Thomas (b.1805) bought Wellshot House in 1841; he was member of a family long connected with Glasgow, and owner of the estates Eastfield, Scotstoun and Stonelaw (oc). Thomas inherited Eastfield House, Rutherglen, from his father in 1855. His parents were James Gray Buchanan and a sister of Gabriel Gray (Old country houses of the old Glasgow gentry). Scottish archives have a will of “Thomas Gray Buchanan of Scotstown in Cambuslang, died at Wellshot House, Cambuslang, father of James Ross Gray Buchanan, Capt. in 26th Regt.of Foot; died 19jun1875, reg. 1875 Glasgow”. Also of Mary Rowand Buchanan or Gray, widow of Thomas Gray Buchanan of Scotstoun, merchant, Glasgow, d. 10may1888 at Wellshot House.
