Facts and Events
Research in England on the ancestry of Thomas Barber was conducted (in England) by Brian Lewis, a Barber descendant living in Florida. (See Sources.) The birth dates for Thomas and his children were taken from "Boston Births, Volume 9, Boston, Massachusetts". From Ancestry of John Barber White and his descendants. p. 131-133 Barber. John Barber(3) of Dorchester, Dorset, England, came to New England with his family in 1664. He was a bodice-maker and tailor by trade as proved by the following Note: “1663-4, Mar. 2: The Steward of the Hospital is desired to disburse unto Mr. Cole the Summe of 3 li. For the transportation of John Barber and his family to New England” (Records of the Borough of Dorchester, co. Dorset, England, p. 521)." Thomas Barber(2) (469), b in England abt 1650; came with his parents to Boston in 1664, where he was a soldier in King Phillip’s war in 1675, took the oath of allegiance with his brother John in 1678. He was a tailor by trade; lived in Boston and Dorchester; m. abt 1676-7, Mary. Children: 472. Thomas Barber(3)+ 473. Ruth Barber, b. in Boston Feb 4, 1679-80. 474. John Barber, b. in Boston Feb 14, 1681 475. Mary Barber, b. in Boston, Feb 25, 1683, d. in Dorchester, Sep 22, 1692. 476. Joseph Barber, b. in Boston, July 9, 1686. Per Betty Barber Lusk (30 July 2006): Neither I nor Brian [Lewis] could ever find death dates for Thomas. I checked the Probates for Suffolk County and Plymouth County-- no record in the Vital Records, either. There was a probate for a Thomas Barber who died in 1718 but he was the Thomas Barber of Charlestown, a "Mariner" who m1. Hannah Roper and m2. Hannah Stedman, NOT our Thomas Barber of Boston. Boston records on deaths were not officially kept until 1745. First Report of the Record Commissioners of the City of Boston, 1876; p. 68-69 Tax List for 1681... 1681 - Division No. 5 No. 5. Capt. I just have to figure that they had given any property away previously to children, and were living with one of their children when they died. (Thomas' daughter Mary died in Dorchester at a fairly young age) References
