Facts and Events
Abt. 1716: Moved from Hingham to Rehoboth, MA. Abstract of Bristol County, Mass. Probate Records, 1687-1745. Compiled by H. L. Peter Rounds. C.G., NEHGS Ref. F. 72, B3, R68, 1987; Volume 6 (1727-1730), p. 151: Will of JOSEPH BARBAR of Reho., Husbandman, dtd. 30 June 1727, prob. 28 July 1727. Wife Deborah. Sons Joseph and Thomas (both under age). Dau. Susannah (under age). "Ye child which my wife is now bigg with." Wife Deborah as Exec. Witns: James Redaway, Abiah Carpenter and John Wilmouth [6:10]. From Betty Barber Lusk, 1 January 2007: "Now to Thomas' youngest son Joseph... - You have his marriage date in Scituate and to whom, etc. In the Hingham VR we have Joseph Jr. born 22 October 1711. Then in the Rehoboth VR we have Susanna born 22 Sept. 1716, Thomas born August 29, 1718 (whatever happened to that Thomas???-- there are no other references to him in the VR). Joseph and Mary's daughter Lydia died 13 June 1719 at age 6 (in Rehoboth) so she was born 1713. Then Mary Kent Barber died Oct. 7 1720 in Rehoboth and Joseph married #2 Deborah Hunt 24 May 1722. Joseph then died 26 June 1727, several months before their daughter Deborah was born on 4 August 1727. This little baby died 4 months later6 December 1727. So Deborah was left as Executor of Joseph's will and with his children Susanna, Joseph and Thomas" Joseph Barber, husbandman left wife Deborah, Executor, and sons Joseph and Thomas (both underage) and daughter Susanna (underage). Will dated 30 June 1727- note in records says "probably 28 July 1727". Poor Deborah!! Left with all three of Joseph's children, and with her own baby daughter dead. But she hung in there and had enough money to raise the three children, and did not marry until they were grown (Deborah married Joseph Cowel of Wrentham Feb. 23, 1743.) (Husbandman means farmer)." Brian Lewis (see correspondence from BBL Letter of 9 September 2004, citing the work of Brian Lewis) indicates that Joseph was also married to a Mary Paine by whom he had Hannah Barber, born 1704 who married Nathaniel Woodcock. But other researchers say that this was a different Joseph Barber (son of Samuel, not Thomas) and that he lived until 1770, dying in Dedham. References
