He was trained in Germany as a tailor, worked in upholstering in New York City, and later was a farmer in Minnesota. Emma Wichelman said that he was in the army in Germany, and was drafted into the Prussian army, but came to America instead. He is remembered as being thin, tall, straight, very reserved and strict with his children. During the American Civil War he served in Company A, First Regiment, Minnesota Heavy Artillery. He was mustered on at Fort Snelling 30 Sep 1864. The unit was ordered to Chattaanooga and he was stationed there until mustered out in September 1865. He claimed a disability from from loss of hearing and dizziness caused by firing of heavy artillery between 1-5 Feb 1865. |
