The Durand family is supposed to have been French Huguenot in origin, coming to Germany from the Alsace area. According to notes left by Ella Leistiko, Katherine spoke French and was a dressmaker for the upper class. Maude M. Strauch told me that she came to New York in order to prevent her sons from being drafted into the Prussian army.
