On 3 September 1844 Stephanus Johannes submitted to the Volksraad a complaint on behalf of his son-in-law that 39 of his oxen were stolen by bandits. On 15 March 1846 Kommandant AWJ Pretoruis reported to the Governor General that all the horses of Stephanus Johannes was stolen on 13 March 1846 by Bushmen from his farm Boesmansrand in the Elandskop district near Boston and that he requested assistance to get the horses back. His plea borne fruit in that it was decided to station a party of mounted men on Stephanus's farm in constant readiness to pursue cattle thief's in the area. The post was manned by one NCO and 10 privates from the Cape Mounted Rifles. It was opened in April 1847.
