1. "My grandfather, Solomon Shewe Sr. lived in Marietta, OH, and I understand some of his family lived in W. VA and PA. He and his children moved from Ohio and came down the Ohio river and up the Mississippi to a point near Rockport and New Canton, IL." (abt 1841.) All lived and died in or near New Canton, except Charlie who moved to Los Angeles and later to Washington. (Charles Shewe ltr to Mrs. Austin, 11/28/1962) [History of Pike Co. says he came in 1844]

2. The History of Pike County says he was born in Pennsylvania of German descent.

3. In 1860 Census lists real estate asssets at $3000; personal at $1000. Eleanor Willis, age 11, resides with them.

5. "Great Grandfather Shewe [Martin Schuy] lived to be 106. Came from Germany. Read German but not English. A very small man - hated Indians. He and wife from Germany Living around Marietta, Ohio. Grandfather S - 88 [?] Grandmother S - 88 [Amelia Butler ] Father 74 - Mother 68 [Solomon Jr & Catherine Brammell ] Grandfather & Grandmother Willis, from Ireland. He was 78.

7. Harve's obit says he was youngest of a family of ten; 3 children not known.

8. The 1860 Federal Census for Pleasant Vale Twp., Pike Co., IL lists Eleanor Willis, age 11, born in Illinois, as living in Solomon's household. (Page 825, Line 11) This Ellen/Eleanor was probablythe daughter of Sampson Willis (1808, PA - ) and Eliza/Elizabeth Harrison; married 30 Nov 1830, OH. (e-mail from Marynel Corton, 12/15/01)

9. Solomon's assets in 1860: Real Estate $3000, Personal $1000. 10. James B. Elledge in 1836 acquired 40 acres in Section 16 (a school section) in Pleasant Vale township, just south of New Canton. Daniel B. Bush, then school commissioner, sold the 40 acres to Elledge for $6.27 an acre, the transfer to Elledge being signed by Governor Joseph Duncan at Vandalia, December 8, 1836. This tract in 1847 passed to Solomon Shewe. Thompson, Ch.70
