Research Notes

  • According to many online researchers, Solomon Lee Hayes was shot at the end of the Civil War by a man named Columbus German because Lee would not give up his mare. German was hung for the crime in Overton county. Supposedly more information on this can be found in the book "History of Overton County, Tennessee." Follow up and proper citations are needed.
  • Solomon Lee Hayes married Elizabeth Anderson abt 1865 in Overton county, Tennessee. They had 3 children: Mary Jane, b. 1858; Sarah Matilda, b. 1860; Elmira Angeline, b. 1862. After Solomon's death, Elizabeth married Noah Johnson.
