1870: Helped to establish Arbor Grove United Methodist Church
- From Arbor Grove UMC website - "About the year of 1870, Mrs. Annie Grant Hayes and her husband, J. Washington Hayes, helped to establish the first Arbor of the present Arbor Grove United Methodist Church located between the communities of Millers Creek and Purlear in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. Hayes were assisted by the Reverend Benny Weisner, a pioneer circuit rider from Iredell County. The church, a brush arbor was built of upright poles covered with brush. The seats were made of rough hewn logs. Scaffolds covered with dirt furnished a safe place for pine torches to light the Arbor for night services."

- per Wilkes Co., NC Deed Book 25, p 451: dtd 14 May 1895 Per Sup. Court of Wilkes County, a division of land to heirs of J.N. Hays [sic] into eight shares: 1. Newton Hays, 2. Robey Hays, 3. Lula Watts wife of J.W. Watts, 4. Clarissa Hayes, 5. Jettie McNeil, wife of D.C. McNeil, 6. J. N. Hays, 7. Naomi Bearman, wife of Leander Bearman, 8. Myrtle Hays.

dtd 11 Oct 1909. Revokes Johnson J. Hays as executor. dtd 24 July 1910. Probated 15 Oct 1912. Will names I.N. Hays as eldest son, deceased, and states that he was given his portion in his lifetime and his children theirs upon his death but now also gives them each $1. Names dau. Casey Grant, deceased, who had already received her portion less $25 which her heir Dorcas Church now is to receive. Names grandson F.D. Hays, who has taken care of him, and gives him his bed and bedsted plus land. The remainder of his personal effects are to be divided equally among W. J. Hays and Lotte Stout and J.L. Hays (his part to be divided equally among his heirs). Revokes Johnson J. Hays from his will in writing and appoints W. J. Hays as executor. Wit: J. S. Eller, J. B.
