Smith was a lifelong resident of the area and died unexpectedly at the Olean General Hospital after a short illness. He was well known in the area, owner of Parish Hardware Store on Main St. in the Village of Portville(in 2011 it is a Sub-Way). He operated the store for 50 years and had retired on Sept. 12, 1942. He was a trustee of The Portville Free Library from its founding in 1910 up to his death. He was a member of the Portville School Board for 10 years, and served as a trustee for the Portville Methodist Church for 42 years and belonged to the Church for 47 years. He also served for 43 years as the superintendent of the Life Methodist Sunday School and 12 years as a active member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. Surviving at the time of his death were his wife, Fanny (Bell) Parish whom he married on June 21, 1893, one daughter, Mrs. Dana Scutt, Cuba, NY., three sons, Robert B., David W. and Earl T. Parish, all of Portville, one sister, Mrs. Archie MacDougald, Andover, NY., and five grandchildren. One daughter, Mary Isobel died in 1924. Funeral was held at the Methodist Church on Jan. 17, 1943.
