- ↑ Simon Spijker, 86, of Orange City died Sunday, November 8, in a hospital in Orange City. Memorial services were at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Don De Glopper and the Rev. Gerrit Docter officiated. Burial was at 10 a.m. in West Lawn Cemetery. Spijker was born November 10, 1900, in Amsterdam, Holland, and came to the United States at age 19. He graduated from Northwestern Classical Academy in 1935 and lived most of his life in Orange City. On August 18, 1927, he married Hannah Duven in Orange City. For many years he was involved with The Volksvriend and eventually became the managing editor. He also was a mail carrier in Orange City for many years. His wife died December 20, 1977, in Orange City. On October 10, 1980, he married Arabella Sipma at Orange City. He was a member of Trinity Reformed Church where he had served as deacon and elder. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Shirley Vogel of Orange City; two grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren. A memorial has been established in his name with the Salvation Army.
