According to the "The History of the Lock Family", "young Simon killed [his sister] cleaning a gun accidentally". A newspaper article describes the tragedy. "A painful accident occurred in Steuben 11/2 miles south of Hedrick on the 28th of February. Simon Shankland was sitting by the stove loading a revolver for the purpose of shooting rabbits and in some unaccountable manner it was discharged, the ball striking his sister...the child died in a few hours after the accident.
