Probably the sister killed accidentally by Simon Shankland in 1881 at the age of 7. (See notes for brother.)

  K.T. Shankland is found in the 1880 Census living in Steuben, Warren Co., Indiana age 50, from KY, father DE and mother PA.  His is living with son Simon V., age 20; Edward, 18; Ella, age 10; Code, son, age 7; Belle, age 5; all born in Indiana.  His [half] sister Mary A. Shankland, age 27, born Kentucky (father Delaware, mother Kentucky) is keeping house; and William Berry, 'hosteler' age 40 from Ireland; are also in the household. [The last 2 children may be from a second marriage.] {p.49a}
 "A painful accident occurred in Steuben 1 1/2 miles south of Hedrick on the 28th of February.  Simon Shankland was sitting by the stove loading a revolver for the purpose of shooting rabits and in some unaccountable manner it was discharged, the ball striking his sister, which entered the right side and passed so near through the body that the physican cut it out on the opposite side.
