Sarah's origins and maiden name are unknown. Her first sighting is in 1696 when she and her husband John Swallow had a son named Edward baptised at Kimpton in Hertfordshire. A further three children followed: John in 1699, Ann in 1701 and William in 1705. John worked as a tailor.

Sarah lived to see at least nine grandchildren born in her lifetime, with her first known grandchild born in 1723. Several of her grandchildren died young.

John died in 1742. Sarah outlived him by ten years. She was buried at Kimpton on 7th December 1752, when she was described as "very ancient".
