John Swallow's origins are unknown. His first sighting is in 1696 when he and his wife Sarah had a son named Edward baptised at Kimpton in Hertfordshire. A further three children followed: John in 1699, Ann in 1701 and William in 1705. John worked as a tailor.

John lived to see at least nine grandchildren born in his lifetime, with his first known grandchild born in 1723, although several of his grandchildren died young.

John died in 1742, being buried at Kimpton on 10th January 1742. Sarah survived him by about ten years.
