Facts and Events
Married Penfold in 1875 and gave birth to Hugh in 1876. She appears to be living with her parents and 4 year old Hugh in London during the 1881 census. Registered as married on census, but name was still recorded as 'Richards'. Not sure what happened to her after that. It is probable that she left her husband in South Africa and remained in England. Her father was William Attwell Richards, a merchant, still living then. His address was 3 Avenue Terrace, Hammersmith 1891 england census has 'Fanny Penfold' age 36 born Cape of Good Hope as a visitor with her son Hugh, aged 15, in the household of Charles Jennings (73) and Jane Jennings (67), in Minster in Sheppey, Kent. Her marrital status is given as 'widow' (but we know that Captain Penfold was alive and well in Cape Town in 1901) and occupation given as 'living on own means'. Jennings's occupation is given as 'retired marriner'. |
