Information from Vida. Capt Penfold RNYR married 3 times and had two sons: Hugh and Marchant (half-brother of Hugh), Marchant born Dec 1873 in Exeter to Mary Browne Penfold (nee Mary Browne-Mason??) who died Dec 1873, Exeter. Hugh born Sept 1876, London,to Sarah Frances Penfold (nee Richards) .

Penfold left England for South Africa at an unknown date where he became friendly with Cecil John Rhodes who made him Port Captain in Cape Town. Penfold's ships were called 'The Doris' and 'The Daphne'. Penfold taught Rhodes to yacht and entertained him at the Mt Nelson. Penfold suffered from asthma and Rhodes sent him to Kimberley to become a director of the de Beers diamond mining company. Penfold was involved in the seige of Kimberley (Boer war). According to the book 'Rhodes, a race for Africa' by Anthony Thomas, Penfold shared quarters with Rhodes in noisey rooms above a bank in Adderley Street, Cape Town. Penfold apparently ensured that Rhodes "always left the premises suitably dressed".

INFO FROM ALAN S CARTER: The man you are looking for is Marchant Penfold christened 9th April 1845 at St Clement Danes Church. I have a marriage certificate for him dated 19th November 1875 at the Camberwell Road Chapel, Islington, London to Sarah Frances Richards. He was a Widower aged 35 and she was a Spinster aged 21 of 112, Highbury Hill, Islington. Her father was William Attwell Richards a merchant, still living then. His address was 3 Avenue Terrace, Hammersmith and his father Oliver was deceased.

Oliver was a Druggist (or Chemist of) St James' Westminster in 1837 and was the son of Hugh Penfold and Mary Marchant Lashmar of Angmering, Sussex.

My connection in this is my ancestor William Penfold was also a Master Mariner, born in Arundel, Sussex in 1785 and married at St Clement Danes Church. Westminster in 1811. I am sure William was a relative of Oliver and it is just possible that Marchant could have gone to sea with William when Marchant was a small boy. William was in the Merchant Navy and was a Captain of a ship at Lerwick, Shetland in 1845. I would like to find the early marine records for Marchant to discover if he served on a ship with William and it would possibly show up in Marchant's Master's ticket records at the PRO.
