Facts and Events
On the 1900 census Sarah said she had had 9 children, but only four were now living. So Robert had died by 1900. Notes contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha: The New York Times, January 4, 1913, Page 9: “HICKS.—At Glen Cove, L. I., on the sixth day, first month, 3d, 1913, Sarah Appleby Mott, widow of the late Willet Hicks and daughter of the late Leonard and Hannah Willis Mott, in the 81st year of her age. Funeral services will be held at the residence of her daughter, Gertrude Hicks Hill, Glen Cove, L. I., on (Sunday,) first day, first month, 5th, 1913, at 1 P. M. Carriages will meet train arriving at Glen Cove at 12:26.” Note that Sarah Mott Hicks was a strict Quaker, so the dates are given in that format. Note that the date of death is January 3, 1913, not June 3, 1913 as your database current states. Here, her daughter is called “Gertrude Hicks Hill”, but I do not know if that means that she married a man with the surname Hill in the time period between her parents’ deaths, or if it is a typographical error. I was unable to find any announcements for a “Hill–Hicks” wedding. References
