The 1910 Census is very difficult to read and the indexer has read this family as 'Dicks'. It is actually Leonard M. Hicks and his father-in-law and family are living with him. 1910 Census Dist 1137, Oyster Bay, Nassau Co., New York Leonard M Dicks head M W 51 M1 NY NY NY Rebecca J Dicks wife F W 36 M1 3ch/3 lvg NY NY NY (the image is actually Rebecca Y.) Now we find that there was indeed a brother named Leonard Mott Hicks, with his middle name being his mother’s maiden name. But why is he not mentioned in the newspaper accounts regarding his parents and siblings? Search for him in other venues led to the answer, with the following engagement and marriage announcements:

The New York Times, April 17, 1894, Page 5:

“THE SOCIAL WORLD. —Miss McCoun Engaged.—The engagement of Miss Rebecca Youngs McCoun of Oyster Bay, L. I, a great-granddaughter of Vice Chancellor William Townsend McCoun, to Leonard Hicks of Roslyn has been announced.”

The New York Times, November 25, 1897, Page 7:

“Hicks—McCoun. At Oyster Bay, L. I., yesterday afternoon [i.e. on Wednesday, November 24, 1897], Miss Rebecca Youngs McCoun, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney McCoun of that place, and Leonard M. Hicks, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Willet Hicks of Locust Valley, L. I., were married by the Rev. Henry H. Washburn, rector of Christ's Church, at the home of the bride's parents. The bride wore a brown tailor-made traveling gown. She is a great-grand-daughter of William T. McCoun, who was Vice Chancellor and Justice of the Supreme Court.” 13:51, 28 December 2011 (EST)13:51, 28 December 2011 (EST) So he married a non-Quaker and was presumably dismissed from the church, and possibly shunned by his family.
