Sarah Terwilliger, daughter of James and Melinda McConnell was born May 12, 1849, in Jackson county, Indiana, and departed from this life February 26, 1934. She was a woman of rugged constitution and her last illness was of short duration. When a child her parents moved from Indiana, crossing at Burlington on a flat boat and located in Decatur county near Westerville. She was married to Levi Stockwell Terwilliger December 16, 1869. Later they moved to the Terwilliger homestead in Ringgold county, which they later purchased and lived here until her husband passed away in 1915 and resided there until her death. One daughter, Mamie, died at the age of 16 and Ara in infancy. There remains of the immediate family three sons, Day, Mack and Gay; four daughters, Mrs. Jennie Greenrod, Mrs. Lona Main, Mrs. Lena Foster of Wapello, Ivy at home; 34 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, one brother James McConnell, Sioux Falls, S. D., two sisters, Mrs. John McGuire, Watsonville, Calif., Mrs. Mark McClain, Long Beach, Calif. Mrs. Terwilliger was a woman of a family of 12 children, 12 reared in the home of a large family. She appreciated that association when she established a home of her own by extending a cordial invitation to others to share her home and was never happier than when doing for others. In early days when the sickness came in the neighborhood either far or near, she was always willing to go and help relieve suffering. Grandma, as she was called by many, enjoyed the association of all children as well as those of her immediate family and will be greatly missed by many. Six of her grandsons were pall bearers.
Funeral services were held at the home in Poe township, Wednesday afternoon, March 1, at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. M. R.Talley, pastor of the Methodist church and interment made in the Lesanville cemetery.
