Sarah Ann Edwards was baptised on 27th July 1845 at North Mundham in Sussex, daughter of Sarah Ann Edwards, formerly Hammond, and her husband John Edwards, an agricultural labourer. Young Sarah was the eighth of their nine children. At the time of her baptism they were living at Runcton, a hamlet in the parish of North Mundham. Both her maternal grandparents were living nearby at Lagness. By the time Sarah's younger brother William was born in 1848 the family had moved to the nearby parish of Sidlesham, where they lived at a hamlet called Chalder. The 1851 census finds Sarah living at Chalder with her parents, siblings and young niece (who was only four years younger than Sarah).
Sarah's maternal grandmother died in 1858, following by her maternal grandfather in 1860. The 1861 census finds Sarah still living at Chalder with her parents and siblings. On this occasion she was described as a farm labourer. This is the only occupation found for Sarah to date.
In 1870 Sarah had a daughter, Mary Ann, baptised at Sidlesham. The 1871 census finds Sarah and her daughter living at Sidlesham with Sarah's parents and three of Sarah's brothers.
Sarah's father John died in 1872. After his death the family left Chalder and moved within Sidlesham parish to Street End, where Sarah and her daughter appear in the 1881 census living with Sarah's mother and two of her brothers, George and John. The 1881 census also notes that Sarah suffered from epileptic fits.
By 1891 Sarah and her mother and two of her brothers had moved again to Church Lane. Sarah's daughter Mary had left home by this time, and was working as a housemaid in the London area. Sarah continued to live at Church Lane with her increasingly elderly mother for several years; Sarah's brother George died in 1897, but Sarah, her mother and her brother John were still at Church Lane in 1901. Sarah's mother died in 1903, aged 95. Sarah continued to live at Church Lane after her mother's death, appearing there alone in the 1911 census.
Sarah died in 1914, aged 69.
