Alfred Edwards was baptised on 4th June 1843 at North Mundham in Sussex, son of Sarah Ann Edwards, formerly Hammond, and her husband John Edwards, an agricultural labourer. Alfred's baptism records that the family lived in the hamlet of Runcton. Alfred was the seventh of his parents' nine children. When he was born both his maternal grandparents were living nearby. Some time between 1845 and 1848 the family left Runcton and moved to Chalder in the nearby parish of Sidlesham.

Alfred appears in the 1851 census living with his parents and siblings at Chalder. His maternal grandmother died in 1858 and his maternal grandfather died in 1860. Alfred was still living with his parents and siblings at Chalder in 1861, by which time he was working as an agricultural labourer.

Alfred's parents were still living at Chalder in the 1871 census, but Alfred was lodging with his older sister Fanny and her husband James Robinson by then. Alfred's father died in 1872.

On 20th November 1880, aged 37, Alfred was married at Hunston to Martha Heather. She was twelve years his junior, being 25 when they married. They settled at Highleigh in Sidlesham parish, where they appear in both the 1881 and 1891 censuses.

Alfred died in 1895, aged 51, being buried at Sidlesham on 5th February 1895. He and Martha had been married for 14 years. Martha outlived Alfred by 53 years. Alfred's mother also outlived him.

This baptism has been linked to the Alfred Edwards who married Martha Heather on the basis that their marriage certificate says he was the son of John Edwards, and in the censuses after their marriage Alfred gave an age and place of birth suggesting he was born in North Mundham around the early to mid 1840s.
