John Edwards was baptised on 8th October 1837 at Pagham in Sussex, son of Sarah Ann Edwards, formerly Hammond, and her husband John Edwards, an agricultural labourer. Young John's baptism notes that the family lived in the hamlet of Lagness. Both John's maternal grandparents were still alive and living at Lagness at this time. John was the fourth of nine children.

Shortly after John's birth his parents left Lagness, moving to Bramber, in the neighbouring parish of North Mundham, where they were living when John's next brother was born in 1840. The 1841 census finds John living with his parents and siblings at Bramber. Some time between 1842 and 1843 the family moved again to Runcton, also in North Mundham parish. They moved again some time between 1845 and 1848 to the neighbouring parish of Sidlesham, where they appear in the 1851 census living at Chalder. By this time John was working as an agricultural labourer. John never married.

In 1858 John's maternal grandmother died, followed two years later by John's maternal grandfather.

The family stayed at Chalder for some years, appearing there in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses. John's father died in 1872, after which John moved with his mother, his brother George, his sister Sarah and her daughter to Street End in Sidlesham, where they appear in the 1881 census. They then moved to Church Lane in Sidlesham, where they appear in the 1891 censuses. John's brother George died in 1897. John was still living at Church Lane in the 1901 census with his mother and sister Sarah. On this occasion John described himself as a former farm labourer, suggesting he had retired.

John's mother died in 1903, aged 95. It seems likely that John and his sister Sarah continued to live at Church Lane after their mother's death, as Sarah was still there in the 1911 census. John outlived his mother by less than six years; he died in 1909, aged about 72.
