Sarah Richardson, daughter of John Richardson and Nancy Allbritton, who was born 22 November 1827 at Simpson Co., MISSISSIPPI (Not proven) She died on 05 March 1889 near Buffalo, Leon Co Texas, and was buried at Keechi Cemetery, Leon Co., Texas John Richardson, father of Sarah, married Amos' mother, Mary, after William Mahaffey's death Thanks Ben, The first thing I better tell you is that I am pretty much convinced that Amos' wife and the mother of Sarah Alice and Robert Mahaffey was Sarah Laird, daughter of Robert and Nancy Laird. I was never able to document the Richardson , and I feel problem occurred with the 1850 census, when Amos and Sarah have in their household, Amos' mother, Mary (probably Durdin/Durdino) whose second husband was John Richardson. Her first being William Mahaffey. I think a researcher thought Mary was Sarah's mother. In 1850 Amos and Sarah are living next to Robert Laird: 1850 Census Jasper Co., Texas p. Robert Laird age 45 male born in Geo rgia Nancy 41 female MS Mary Jane Francis M. 15 female MS (Frances married William M. Lowe 1 Jan 1852 and they stay in Jasper Ann Elizabeth 12 female TX Penelope 9 female TX James J. 7 male TX Robert J. W. 5 male TX Nancy 3 female TX Joseph A. 1 male TX a P. Laird is listed in the 1860 mortality schedule, female age 17 died in September of apoplexy (in Tyler Co, TX) She was born in Texas. Pretty sure she is Penelope. Jim Laird writes this about Robert: Robert Laird moved from Mississippi to Texas in 1836 with his family. He received a land grant of 1200 plus acres which he located in Jasper County. He lived there until sometime in the early 1850s when he moved to Tyler County. The 1854-55 scholastic census indicated some of his children were enrolled in school there. The land he purchased in Tyler County was located in the Gavino Araujo five league survey and joined the land of Amos Mahaffey. Roberts wife Nancy must have died sometime in the 1850's because he married Talitha (I hope this first name is spelled correctly) Hargrave on D ecember 31, 1858. Robert and Talitha sold their land in Tyler County on October 3, 1859 and this ends the trail. Because so many people moved from Tyler County to Harris County at about this time I th ought it probable that Robert had done the same. However I could not find him on the tax role or any indication that he purchased land there. I have searched in Texas and tracked backwards to Mississi ppi with no success. With a number of people looking maybe we will turn up something. ------------------------- Here is Amos family in 1850: 1850 Census Jasper Co. In 1880, she is living with Robert Mahaffey and is listed as his aunt. Other children with Sarah are Robert and Nancy Laird's grandchildren. 1870 Census Harris Co. Nancy Laird died sometime in the 1850's and Robert married Talitha H ardgrave in Jasper Co., in 1858. ---- Another note from Jim Laird: I have tried to find what Sarah Mahaffey's maiden name was through the death certificates of her children. I have the death certif icate of Amos Mahaffey who was born August 2, 1851 in Jasper County and died January 12, 1941. His father is listed as Amos Mahaffey and his mother as Sallie Durden. I also have the death certificate of James B. Mahaffey born October 14, 1856 in Tyler County and died November 15, 1931. His father is listed as Amos Mahaffey and his mother as Sarah Williams, I am still looking for other children of this family that we might acquire additional death certificates. Many times the information on death certificates is suspect. ( I think the Sallie Durden -- someone just mixed up what generation the Durden name was. I have no idea where the Williams came from.) ----- Original Message ----- From: Ben Bunting To: Verna Reed Sent: Wednesday, August 14, 2002 4:48 AM Subject: Re: Mahaffey Mahaffey Family History.rtf [1/2] Hi Verna I'm related to the Mahaffeys through the marriages of the Barlow and Eley families.
