Bell said Mahaffey retired October 03 due to medical reasons & died Monday of respiratory failure following a six month battle with cancer. Bell said Mahaffey retired October 03 due to medical reasons & died Monday of respiratory failure following a six month battle with cancer. Bertie Shepherd Gibson was born August 16, 1882, the daughter of Joseph Alex & Margaret Rebecca Lawley. After their marriage they settled In the Pleasant Grove Community. To this union was born eight children: Mrs. M.K. "Verna" Kilpatrick, Mabel Gibson, Mrs. H.T. "Totsie" Kilpatrick, A.D. Gibson "Opal Hughes," Shepherd Gibson "Velma Bates", Mrs. Clayton "Selma" Brooks, Mrs. Mark "Thelma" Beechie, Ima Faye Gibson Lewis (deceased). The children all grew up and attended schools In Thornton; three taught In the public schools of Limestone County. The others were housewives and good citi- zens of the community. Mrs. Bertie was a devoted wife and mother. She spent her time providing a lovely and stable home for her family; she was a very industrious person, Alabama ways work- ing In her beautiful yard, canning, cooking, and gardening. She is remembered for her true pioneer spirit; one of the last homemakers to use the old "battling block" to launder her clothes. Mr. Amos was a farmer In the area and a Public Weigher In Thornton for 6 years. He was known for his honesty and integrity In all that he did. He was a very de- voted to his family and his grandchildren have fond memories of his kind & gentle spirit. He was a gracious host to the many friends who visited the large family; the Gibsons were known for their singing talents and the piano was the center of interest In their home.
