Mahaffey, 52, a Carlsbad native, died Monday at Wal- ter Reed Army Medical Center I n Washington DC, Major Bruce Bell spokesman for the U.S. Army, confirmed today. Bell said Mahaffey retired October 03 due to medical reasons & died Monday of respiratory failure following a six month battle with cancer. Mahaffey, son of Fred and Flossie Mahaffey, 404 N. 11th St.,Carlsbad, was pre- sented with the Distinguished Service Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster) dur ing a ceremo ny In Washington, September 24. Gen. John A. Wickham Jr., Army Chief of Staff, presented the medal to Mahaffey In recognition of his "exceptonally meritorious service while assigned to positions o f great responsibilities from July 1955 to September 1986." Prior to his retire- ment, Mahaffey served as Commander In Chief of the U.S. Readiness Command at McDill Air Force Base, Florida, from June 1985 to September 1986. He grew up In Carlsbad and graduated from Carlsbad High School In 1951. He studied business administration at the University of Denver, where he also played footbal l and was named All Conference and All American halfback. In addition to his business degree, he also earned his master's degree In internat ional affairs from George Washington University. Hi s military education inclu ded the U.S. Army Ranger and Airborne schools, the Army Command & General Staff College and the National War College. He was commissioned a second lieutenant In the i nfantry In 1955. Over the years he held numerous assign ments In both command and staff positions. He also served twice In Vietnam, first as advisor of the Viet- namese Army and later In the 9t h Infantry Division as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations as Commander, 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry. Prior to his assignment with the Readiness Command, Mahaffey ser ved In the Pentagon as the Army's Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans. In addition to his parents, Mahaffey is survived by his wife, Jane, formerly of Ala- magordo, and four daughters, Lorrie Ann, Sele ne, Julie Anne and Melissa Jane. Cause of death had not been clarified to his family here by noon today. Mahaffey was servi ng with the Navy In Washington, D.C. Notice of their son's death was received this morning by his father & stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mahaffey, 405 North 11th St, In a telegram from Captain A .D. Lucas, commanding officer at the U.S. Naval Station In Washing ton. Mahaffey will be buried at San Pedro,California, home of his wife and their three sons, Kelly, Gayland and Eugene. His mot her also resides In California Mr. and Mrs. Mahaffey flew to San Pedro this afternoon to confer with their son's wife regarding funeral arrangements. Funeral services are pending with West Funeral Home. Mahaffey, owner of Texas Street Lumber, was also the deputy supervisor of the New Mexico Bureau of Revenue from 1959-60. He was born near Lovington on March 24, 1920, and was raised and educated In Portales. He was employed by Prices Creamory In Portales, and later w ith Royal Crown Cola Co In AMARILLO, POTTER CO., Texas In 1941 he married Geraldine Robbins In Roswell. She later served as Eddy Cou- nty clerk for several years. During World War II he served with the Coast Guard Artillery from November 1942 until December 1945. He moved to Carlsbad In 1951 and formed Texas Street Lumber Company with his father, W.E. Mahaffey, and brother, Fred Mahaffe y. At the time of his death, he was the sole owner of the lumber com pany. He was a member of the Democratic Party, Hillcrest United Methodist Church & DAV #13. Mahaffey, 52, a Carlsbad native, died Monday at Wal- ter Reed Army Medical Center In Washington DC, Major Bruce Bell spokesman for the U.S. Army, confirmed today. Bell said Mahaffey retired October 03 due to medical reasons & died Monday of respiratory failure following a six month battle with cancer. Mahaffey, son of Fred and Flossie Mahaffey, 404 N. 11th St.,Carlsbad, was pre- sented with the Distinguished Service Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster) dur ing a ceremony In Washington, September 24. Gen. John A. Wickham Jr., Army Chief of Staff, presented the medal to Mahaffey In recognition of his "exceptonally meritorious service while assigned to positions of great responsibilities from July 1955 to September 1986." Prior to his retire- ment, Mahaffey served as Commander In Chief of the U.S. Readiness Command at McDill Air Force Base, Florida, from June 1985 to September 1986. He grew up In Carlsbad and graduated from Carlsbad High School In 1951. He studied business administration at the University of Denver, where he also played football and was named All Conference and All American halfback. In addition to his business degree, he also earned his master's degree In internat ional affairs from George Washington University. His military education inclu ded the U.S. Army Ranger and Airborne schools, the Army Command & General Staff College and the National War College. He was commissioned a second lieutenant In the infantry In 1955. Over the years he held numerous assign ments In both command and staff positions. He also served twice In Vietnam, first as advisor of the Viet- namese Army and later In the 9th Infantry Division as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations as Commander, 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry. Prior to his assignment with the Readiness Command, Mahaffey ser ved In the Pentagon as the Army's Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans. Cause of death had not been clarified to his family here by noon today. Mahaffey was serving with the Navy In Washington, D.C. Notice of their son's death was received this morning by his father & stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mahaffey, 405 North 11th St, In a telegram from Captain A.D. Lucas, commanding officer at the U.S. Naval Station In Washing ton. Mahaffey will be buried at San Pedro,California, home of his wife and their three sons, Kelly, Gayland and Eugene. Funeral services are pending with West Funeral Home. Mahaffey, owner of Texas Street Lumber, was also the deputy supervisor of the New Mexico Bureau of Revenue from 1959-60. He was born near Lovington on March 24, 1920, and was raised and educated In Portales. He was employed by Prices Creamory In Portales, and later with Royal Crown Cola Co In AMARILLO, POTTER CO., Texas In 1941 he married Geraldine Robbins In Roswell. She later served as Eddy Cou- nty clerk for several years. During World War II he served with the Coast Guard Artillery from November 1942 until December 1945. He moved to Carlsbad In 1951 and formed Texas Street Lumber Company with his father, W.E. Mahaffey, and brother, Fred Mahaffey. At the time of his death, he was the sole owner of the lumber com pany. He was a member of the Democratic Party, Hillcrest United Methodist Church & DAV #13.
