Facts and Events
[edit] NotesSamuel Zabolinsky changed his name to Wener when he married in New York - name came from cousins of Ida Brode( his wife) in New York named the Weiners. As a little boy in Neshvitch, he had typhoid fever and was wrapped in feathers for warmth. Before he came to America he traveled everywhere - to Capetown, South Africa and London looking for his twin sixteen year old sister, who had disappeared. He came to America on July 30, 1901, when he was 22 (born 1879, arrived 1901). Sam worked in a relative's garment factory in New York. He soon got sick with a heart condition. They then went to Memphis because Abraham Gold, Ida Brode's mother's brother, brought them to Memphis. They slept on the floor because there was no bed. Sam was a peddlar. He worked for Mr. Levy's dress factory. For a short time he was a partner of Uncle Abe Gold. Then Sam bought a store at Poplar and Main and then a store at Jackson and Main. He was called Honest Sam. At Jackson and Main they lived behind the store. A fire broke out while the stairs had been removed for repairs. Sam opened the dry goods store in perhaps 1916. He had stores in Memphis on Main Street but moved to Thomas Street in 1918. Source: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/t/e/Gerald-Stern-DC/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0051.html |
