Facts and Events
[edit] NotesAbraham Gold, was born in Russia, (perhaps in the Odessa, Russia area), as listed in the 1920 Census (shown below, appears to have been corrected from information in prior 1910 census), and based upon an interview with his daughter Rose (Gold) Sachs on February 9-10, 2012, Abraham died at about age 89-90, placing his approx. birthdate at abt. 1863-5, likely few years or so before his before his brother. Abraham appears to have married his wife Ida (prob. abt. 1891/2) before his migration from Russia to to New York in abt. 1894. His first two children, Samuel (b. 1892) and Minnie (b. 1894) were born in Russia before he journeyed to America. His next three children, Benjamin (b. 1896), Joseph (b. 1898) and Simon (b. 1900), were born in New York. According to 1920 census records Abraham's wife Ida did not emmigrate until 1898, but since her son Benjamin is listed as being born in New York in abt. 1896, she likely made the journey by late 1894 or 1895 with her husband. Abraham may have started in New York as a "tailor". On an Application for Naturalization filed in New York on 28 July 1899 (copy shown below):
The timing of events on this Application for Naturalization, perhaps also with Abraham's possible start as a tailor, appear to provide some circumstantial evidence to support this Abraham Gold "tailor" of New York and Abraham Gold "shoemaker/dress shop owner" of New York and later Memphis, Tennessee, as perhaps one in the same. (needs additional research). Abraham and Ida (according to 1920 Census Records) then moved to Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, by about 1902 (Samuel's daughter Katie, born in 1902 is listed in Census records as being born in Tennessee) where he appears to have lived for the remainder of his life. Abraham Gold is listed as being a "shoemaker" by trade or profession and the general nature of his business is described as a "dress shop" in both the 1910 and 1920 census records. Abraham's youngest daughter, Rose Sachs described it as a local "Country Store" in the Memphis area, according to an interview in February, 2011. Both Abraham and his wife Ida are buried in the Baron Hirsch Cemetery in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, along with a few of their children. [edit] Possible Brother SamuelAbraham Gold, is thought be be an older brother of Samuel Gold, who migrated to Los Angeles, California by about 1902, by Samuel Gold's Descendants, but significant discrepancies exist between the probable locations of their families in Russia (
